Stephen Curry is a basketball legend, 7x All Star, 3x NBA Champion, 2009 All-Rookie, 2x MVP, and arguably the best shooter in the history of basketball. Yet there was one thing missing in his accolades, a game winning bucket. It's hard to believe that despite all his achievements, he had not hit a single game-winner in his entire career before yesterday. His shooting last night wasn't exactly pretty, as he went 28.6% on field goals, but he clutched up when it mattered. Otto Porter Jr. secured a Golden State rebound with 5.1 seconds remaining in the game. Coach Steve Kerr called timeout and organized a game plan. They broke out of the timeout, and with 1.6 ticks on the game clock, Curry fired a step-back 20 footer. Bang. He sunk the jumper and lit Chase Center on fire. The crowd went bonkers as Curry hit his first career walk-off winner, winning the game for the Warriors 105-103.
He started extremely sluggish, with only a single point in the 1st quarter, and only 1 made shot from the field at half time. He somehow brought himself back from the dead in the second half, and with the game winner, finished the contest with 22 points, 12 helpers, and tacked on 4 rebounds. SG Jordan Poole was 2nd in scoring for Golden State, scoring 20 points on 46.6% from the field. C Kevon Looney was the leading rebounder for the Dubs, gobbling 12 boards on the night. Klay Thompson missed out on last night's game due to rest, but the Warriors were able to get the job done. Houston C Christian Wood led the team in points and rebounds, tallying 19 and 15, respectively. He's now double-doubled in 3 consecutive contests. PG Kevin Porter Jr. dished 8 dimes for the Rockets, and was the 2nd-leading scorer for Houston with 17 points. The Rockets won the turnover battle, outscoring Warriors in PTS off TOs 29-14, but could not close out the game.
The Rockets are last in the Western conference, and will continue their rebuild next year with a most likely top-5 pick. They get a nice rest before hosting the Spurs on Tuesday night on the 25th. The Warriors now have a 33-13 record and stand at 2nd in the West. They will be an NBA Finals threat with the Splash Brothers back in action, so let's see if they can contend for the 1 seed in the second half of the season. Golden State will continue their homestand on the 23rd. They host a tough foe in the Utah Jazz, currently 4th in the Western conference.
